Why Context Matters for Product Managers

Bare metrics without context are useless for a Product Manager.

Let's say you were looking at time on site for an e-commerce platform.

Customer 1 spends an hour with the search facets while Customer 2 spends a few minutes.

Both didn't make a purchase.

By just looking at the numbers, can you say #1 was struggling with the UX or was thoroughly hooked as he/she searched through several product categories?

Was #2 utterly disengaged or simply quickly found what they were looking for before making an exit.

We can throw in an assortment of trackers like Hotjar, Segment and Amplitude into our sites and setup some stylish dashboards.

But measuring isn't the end goal.

Having those measurements help you decide what to do next is.

And without context, you'll keep faltering.

Numbers tell you the what and when whereas the "why" is where the magic lies.

Create a holistic understanding of the numbers you witness by combining them with surveys, interviews, session replays & experiments.
